“Initial qualitative evidence is that the ease of electronic communication may be making teens less interested in face-to-face communication with their friends. More research is needed to see how widespread this phenomenon is and what it does to the emotional quality of a relationship.”
This really made me think because I guess I realized how true this really is. Although talking over the internet and writing to people is a form of communication, it's not as rewarding as actual face to face conversations because I believe face to face is more emotional. For example, I have talked to some people at school over the internet that I have never talked to face to face before. We have had some really 'in depth' conversations but I haven't felt any 'bond' like I would if it was one of my face to face friends. In fact, every person I have talked to online that I have had no previous face to face conversations...I haven't talked to them any other way than online. It's like...the relationship is kind of fake. I don't know about anyone else but I find it kind of surprising. It seems like if I talked to those people online and built a 'relationship' there, that the relationship would extend beyond the internet...but it never has for me. Any thoughts on this? I mean...is this only me, because I'm Shy? Or has anyone else experienced the same thing?
Anyways...
I am actually not eating something this time. I'm just chewing gum for the first time after surgery! And it tastes good!!! =)
P.S. I really love Sign Language... It's so beautiful <3. My sister is going to go to College to become an ASL interpreter. How cool is that?!?!? I'm proud of her. hehehe
I need to get back to researching new stuff for my Essay now, but it's been fun!
Oh...and I think I am becoming strangely addicted to blogging...because I not only get to write, but I can use it as an excuse in my mind saying "It's still homework...technically". It's actually VERY Distracting!!! hahaha...for reals though, this can't be healthy. =)
You are so funny Tyesha. Your blog posts always make me smile. I some ways I think technological communication helps to enhance real relationships (take this blog for instance... it helps me to get to know you when you are too shy to share in class). But I think if there is no real relationship present at first (like the one established by our common class and common adversity), relationships maintained by technology are superficial... which is what you were suggesting with your post.
