truth

I feel like our discussion on history the other day was exactly about history, but more so a discussion on what we take as truth. Or if we believe in truth in general. I feel like truth is more of a subjective term than objective. What really is truth, is it the fact that if you drop an apple it will fall to the ground... but if you are standing in a pool of water and drop an apple, will that fall directly to the ground? Truth is a matter of position in combination with belief. The view from which you are seeing a situation happen, and then what you believe that certain situation.

man of man, this will... be continued.

  1. That's exactly what I struggle to comprehend. What exactly is truth? I suppose we could take a concept such as gravity and say it is true, for no one can say that there isn't a force that pulls you to the ground on the earth. But when you are in water gravity isn't as strong. The same goes for history. Other than the written word there is no way to prove that history has happened. In this sense one should not focus on what has happened, but rather focus on what is happening now.

Also, Matt: if we only focus on the here and now, like you claim we should, due to us not knowing if history is concretely true than won't the entire point of recording history go to waste? History is there is help us learn from it and change our course of the future. Even if some of the facts are a little murky and some the scandals are covered up there is still an essential need to it. With out history, we would have no knowledge of the Holocaust or the Titanic or the Manhattan Project. We'd be living in a fog of unknowingness, constantly repeating ourselves because we would not be learning from our predecessors previous mistakes. So while, yes, some of our history is probably screwed up we should still spend time focusing on the past.

  4. I feel like truth is what each person holds inside of themselves whether it be actually true or not. For example a Jew does not believe that Jesus has come and disregards the New Testament. To them this is truth. A christian on the other hand believes in Christ Jesus and that is truth to them. For this reason they have different ideas about what is the actual "truth."

  5. Wow... I wish I had seen this comment earlier... Jews actually DO believe in Jesus Christ Hannah. They believe he was a great and holy man... they do NOT believe he was divine. Islam believes in Christ as a holy prophet as well.
