When thinking about what phenomenal woman leader I would write about for one of the previous essays, I stumbled upon what I believe is an important issue facing women today. To find my muse I thought back to the American “heroes” and historical figures my teachers introduced me to in elementary school. The first names that came to mind were Betsy Ross and Dolley Madison. It occurred to me that neither of these women did anything outstanding or phenomenal! This discovery led to my conclusion that the most important issue facing women today is that we are raised in a society that focuses, from an early age, on the women that do trivial and domestic acts in history. Other women, that have created actual change, are left to be undermined in High School where the damage is already done and a majority of the audience is using their American Studies class as an hour to catch up on sleep.
I specifically remember being read a picture book about Betsy Ross in second grade. There in the pages she sat sewing away on a little wooden stool, crafting the first American flag by the light of a single candle. What a wonderful role model for young girls! They can all aspire to a future of pricked fingers and strained eyesight just like their great American hero Betsy! Through Betsy Ross our society continues to support the degrading, old fashioned opinion that women belong at home performing small tasks for men rather than out in the real world. Yet for some reason, we continue to highlight her as an important female role in American history.
Now, for dear Dolley Madison: goodness gracious, where would we be without good Ol’ Dolley? Back in 1814 when the British were advancing on Washington, Dolley managed to flee from harm, making sure to grab the great portrait of George Washington on her way out. On top of that she managed to save all of her favorite silver and china! Can you imagine an America without the famous painting of Washington to guide us? And certainly our country would not be the same today had Dolley not been able to use her best teacups at her extravagant parties! Dolley is a great example of how society chooses to showcase only women who have had insignificant roles in history. Instead of teaching our children about one of the many influential first ladies or political figures in history, we choose to glorify Dolley for saving a painting.
America needs to stop wasting time teaching about woman who have had little influence on our nation and focus on those that have created real change. In my second grade class we should have focused more on Susan B. Anthony and less on Betsy Ross. By the time I began studying women’s rights in school I was in the eleventh grade! To my great dismay I found most of my peers had their heads on their desks or glazed over eyes. Instead of recognizing great American women such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Alice Paul, and Clara Barton many of my classmates and other Americans will think first of the seamstress and painting-saver that they are more familiar with. The many accomplishments of American women over the course of our history will continue to be overshadowed by the women written about in elementary picture books. Its time we focused our attention - in both early education and in American in general - on significant women leaders that have helped give American women a voice and have helped shape our country into what it is today.

I don't like to title posts
I don't feel like writing a big long post, so I just simplified my thoughts for the day instead:
What's the point of working hard if you get nothing but failure to show for it in the end?
I would keep the post at that, but I know that a part of me doesn't believe that at all. I know that I'll keep trying because it's stupid to give up when things don't go your way. I hope our Controversial Issue thing goes well on Friday...it's kind of nerve racking not knowing what all we should put in and leave out. But things will go how they are meant to, I suppose. hahaha....
I think I'm going to need help on my Op-Ed essay because I don't know how to split my Topic into a few points. So yeah...random post that was meant to be short and ended up like this I guess. Normally I would say today has been a bad day...but really, I am healthy, I'm alive, I didn't lose a limb or a family member...so I guess all in all, today is still a good day.
I don't like to title posts because I can't figure out what to title them!!! =)
I'm freaking out.
Contrary to Stariha's post I am still freaking out a little. I had high hopes for fixing my op-ed tonight but during the peer edit I didn't even get my thesis statement fixed, which is not against my group at all because we had a big group and we worked on other papers, but still I'm having problems with my beginning and i don't want to work on my paper until I get more help which is why I'm really looking forward to my conference tomorrow! (But this is why I HATE peer editing Stariha!)
On the bright side, I enjoyed Production Art today and only 5 more months until we graduate!

DON'T FREAK OUT !(no this is not yelling Mal... it's emphasis)
I realize in my attempt to try to forge ahead and stay on schedule, I left class today in upheaval. Please don't freak out about your tests and the test taking changes I began to share with you. I will tie up loose ends tomorrow. We will review our tests, discuss the difficulties, and examine the new test taking methods... I will give you strategies to help improve test scores. All-in-all, for as freaked out as all of you seemed to be about the test, I don't think grades were bad at all. The bulk of you were in the 80% range which is very respectable... and the problems we're suffering from revolve around the tendency to write too generally. We'll go over that more tomorrow. So PLEASE DON'T FREAK OUT AND STRESS OVER THE TEST AND FUTURE TESTS!!!!! I will allow myself to suck it up and go off schedule a little so we can completely discuss and review the test. But please trust me... the changes I make will be aimed at helping you and not punishing you. Give me a shot before you begin doubting and hating on me... I mean, I do want all of you to succeed... except Garrett. :)
Ha ha... jk, lol, and all that textspeak stuff. I'm just joking Garrett, quit contemplating suicide.

I feel so much better about this op-ed now that I have talked to Stariha! thank you sooo much :) my points were all jumbled up and now the words are just flowing out, although I shouldn't speak so soon because I'm not done writing it! Good Luck everyone with their essays !

This op ed paper is really hard like i cant write what I want because I keep going over 750.........who would put a length restriction on something? whoever had this idea should die
Op-Ed
I'm really worried I won't be able to limit myself to 700-800 words for this essay:/ My first draft was almost 400 words and it was still missing a lot of information and detail. Daannnggg....
Jonny is so confusing
The first chapter of Jonny got his gun was so confusing to me. I couldnt get a grasp of what was going on because the switch from his flask back and now was so unclear. I'm just glad Stariha cleared it up for me!
