I don't understand!

In class today we were asked to compare the relationship between Nathan and his family, the relationship between America and the Congo, and the relationship between Tata Ndu and his community. I can see how the way Nathan treats his family is similar to the way the United States treated the situation in the Congo, but if these two things are so common then does that mean that Tata Ndu does not treat his people very well? If these three things are suppose to be similar then I guess I disagree. Tata Ndu may not be extremely intelligent but he truly cares for his people. I believe he is the exact opposite of Nathan. Tata Ndu was willing to try new things, (like voting) despite what he may believe.

  1. We were to list the simularities AND the differences. If we were just to say they were the same, then I would agree with you. Tata Ndu treats his people (and others) with respect and is always open to new ideas, but believes his ways are ultimatly better.

I also think the way Nathan treats Tata Ndu may be a message on how America treats/views Lumbaba (Lumb-somthing-or-other, their names ar hard to spell!!) Lumbada (Ndu) is mostly understanding and down to earth, while America (Nathan) tells his family (US civilians) that he is foolish and knows nothing about... anything!

  2. Tata Ndu is different in his treatment of his people.... you're right Em. He cares for them and tries to do what is best for them. He doesn't act with selfish intent... however, he is not necessarily knowledgeable in the ways of the outer world. So, he does what he knows and acts according to his understanding... which may seem odd or ignorant to outsiders (like Nathan and us).
